Engineering/Design
If you’ve got designs on a career in design, Universal Forest Products has an opportunity that can take you from apprentice to Design/Engineering Manager…and beyond. You set the goals and we will help you get there.
The engineering/design career path at Universal enables engineers (and engineers-in-training) interested in designing the best products on the market and building a career and opportunity in the process. Use precision, ingenuity and knowledge to design components and advance your opportunity in highly competitive atmospheres.
Those kinds of challenges build excellent designers. They also build the kind of employees that become Universal “stars”: hard workers who love solving problems and who value their contributions to a team, a project, and to success.
With increasing proficiency in computer skills, mathematical skills, design expertise, budget analysis, customer service, management, and leadership, designers at Universal have limitless opportunities.
Where does the path start and where does it lead?
Perhaps you’ll start as a Designer Apprentice (which minimally requires an associate degree and demonstrated basic skills). There, you’ll begin to learn the site-built construction business and enhance your knowledge of truss, engineered wood products and wall panel design. From there, and with increasing responsibility in design, customer service, and management, you can become a Designer Trainee, Designer Estimator, Senior Designer, and, finally, Design/Engineering Manager.
In the senior-level jobs, you can use your design skills (which, by then, will be superior to most component engineers in the industry) to help shape the future of the department and of the company. From recruiting and training employees to exploring new product lines to taking the lead in product development, you can help to grow Universal’s capabilities and success. You also will be instrumental in maintaining Universal’s reputation as the leading designer of reliable and innovative products in the building and lumber products arenas.
