Product Information

Do I need experience in construction or building decks?
No. The keystone connector allows a deck-building novice to easily install a complete deck with minimal tools. Reading the entire instructions prior to installation is recommended for a quick, hassle-free installation.

How quickly can a Keystone Deck be put together?
That depends on the size of the deck. Aside from site preparation and trimming the posts, two inexperienced people can generally construct a basic 8’ x 8’ deck in less than an hour. As you take advantage of the portability feature of your Keystone Deck, tear-down and construction should become quicker over time.

What sizes and lengths does it come in?
The keystone deck system is based on a 4’ x 4’ grid joist system with interchangeable parts. The 8’ x 8’ starter kit can be expanded in 4’ and 8’ increments. Virtually any size can be created where the length of each side is divisible by 4. Examples of common deck sizes that are readily achieved using this system are: 8’ x 8’, 8’ x 12’, 8’ x 16’, 12’ x 16’, 16’ x 16’, etc...  You can easily add to your Keystone Deck at a later date.

How does the cost of a Keystone Deck compare to a site-built deck?
The materials alone for a site-built deck may be lower than the total cost of the same size Keystone Deck, but the installation time and labor will cause the site-built project to be more costly.

Which stair rail kit do I need?
The stair rails are pre-manufactured with a 7-1/2” rise which will determine the overall deck height. It is recommended that the deck height be 1” to 8” below the threshold of your door. The deck height is figured out by multiplying the number of treads by 7-1/2 and adding 7-1/2 for the step up to the deck surface. For example, if your threshold were 40” from the ground, you would purchase the 4 tread stair kit for a 37-1/2” deck height (4 x 7.5 = 30 + 7.5 = 37.5 inches). For your convenience, the table in the installation instructions lists the corresponding deck height for each stair kit.

What is KDAT?
Kiln-Dried After Treatment. The structural wood components of your Keystone Deck were dried and “pre-shrunk” in a controlled environment to prevent substantial shrinkage, cupping, or warping. The removal of excess moisture makes the components lighter than if they were standard pressure-treated wood, which makes them easier to handle and install. This also allows you to apply stains and sealers immediately upon constructing your deck.

Can I use a Keystone Deck for my second story walkout?
No. The Keystone Deck is designed for first story applications.

Do I need a building permit to construct a Keystone Deck?
Keystone Decks meet 2003 International Residential Code requirements for free-standing, one-story residential decks not exceeding 200 square feet. A permit may be required for larger structures. Consult your local building code official prior to installing.

Should I place my posts on blocking?
The Keystone Deck was designed to be a free-standing structure on a floating foundation. While not a requirement, a suitable block or pad under each support post will help resist sinking or settling and ensure levelness and stability.

How do the floor sections attach to the deck frame?
Each floor section comes with eye screws pre-attached to the underside and a tie down kit. The j-bolt from the tie down kit goes through the eye screw and hooks around the supporting deck frame. A washer and wing nut are finger-tightened on the end of the j-bolt to secure the floor.
