Choosing the Right Wood

Universal's selection of pallets and skids includes all types of imported and domestic hardwood and softwood. In terms of cost and quality, softwoods or mixed hardwoods are often best for pallets. Universal will work with you to choose the right pallet and to specially design the pallet that best suits your requirements. Before choosing the wood species you want for your pallets, consider six handling factors:

  1. The intended use of the pallets - whether for storage, intra-plant movement, or shipment.
  2. The expected wear and tear on the pallets from forklifts and hand trucks.
  3. The degree of impact to be exerted on the pallets during loading.
  4. The amount of static load expected.
  5. The type of handling equipment to be used.
  6. The amount of torsional strength needed.

To save costs and the environment, the wood fiber per pallet usually can be reduced while still maintaining structural integrity and quality.
