Understanding the End Tag

Each piece of Universal Forest Products’ treated wood contains an "end tag", a tag with information about the preservative used, the appropriate end use (i.e., above-ground or ground-contact), the quality standard, and safe handling information.

The quality standard information on the end tag is especially important. Building code regulations sometimes mandate the use of treated wood that meets certain standards. The end tag on products treated in accordance with ESR or AWPA standards and in compliance with model building code requirements refers to both the standard (e.g., ESR 2240) and the third-party inspection (e.g., "Monitored by Timber Products Inspection"). If this information is not included on the end tag, the product does not meet the code requirements.

The International Code Council (ICC), which develops model building codes for use nationwide, requires wood product manufacturers not only to conduct in-house quality control measures but also to subscribe to an independent inspection agency that verifies for customers that the wood has been treated in accordance with applicable standards. Hence, a wood product’s end tag may include the quality mark of such a third-party inspection agency.

The ICC-ES has deemed ProWood® to be code-compliant with the details listed under the ESR-2240 Report.

For an independent viewpoint on determining whether your wood is properly treated, see the USDA's Forest Products Laboratory TechLine on new wood treatments.
